"We otter protect the oceans!" Sea otters are a keystone species of kelp forests in the North Pacific Ocean, controlling the populations of sea urchins that would otherwise destroy the kelp. Otters are very intelligent and playful, and demonstrate tool use by using rocks to open shells; they have even been known to have favorite rocks that they use time and time again. These adorable animals were once nearly hunted to extirpation from the Americas for their thick, waterproof fur, but better regulation and reintroduction programs have regrown their numbers. They are currently seen as competition by shellfish fishermen, whose target catch overlaps with the diet of otters, but this presents a conundrum as without sea otters, shellfish habitat would degrade. Fishermen must learn to coexist with sea otters, as without them kelp forest ecosystems would collapse.
